Nothing is simpler than its causal structure. Because of the centrality of connectivity in neural operations, the framework of neural causality is neuroanatomy. You therefore cannot know the brain any better than you know neuroanatomy, a vastly ramified and complex affair. Yet even a thorough command of the jungle of neural pathways - which in many ways resembles a bowl of spagetti more than an electronic circuit board - will not yield functional interpretations without the help of basic operational principles or heuristics that allow you to relate anatomical connectivity to the functional division of labor among the brain's many component structures. In this tutorial I mean to sketch the outlines of some principal brain macrosystems engaged in what used to be called "higher nervous activity"; moreover to explore some general principles relevant to the functional interpretation of neuroanatomical structure; and finally to point to the need to guard against some neuro-myths and misconceptions that impede progress in so doing.
