Dr. Nicholas Strausfeld is a Regents’ professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Director of the Center for Insect Science at the University of Arizona. His research on the insect visual system focuses on the functional dissection of centers, comparable to olfactory circuits, that reconstruct features of the visual scene. Similarities between circuits pertaining to vision and olfaction raise important questions about the evolution of sensory systems, and the degree to which brain organization suggests genealogical correspondence across phyla.
